Remove the hardware and if it is metal you have a couple of options. You can use a stripper like Citri Strip or place the pieces in boiling water for about five minutes and then remove and place in a cold water bath, Use a brush to remove the paint.
just use the citristrip which is a safe non toxic remover
You can boil the hardware in water and let cool. The paint should peel off fairly easily.
Citri strip works pretty good for hardware. You can also remove hardware spray cheap $store oven cleaner on it. Outside of course, it will bubble up can usually spray off with hose (not too close don't want splatter in your face) or wipe off with rag.
Wipe it off, as soon as you goof. Or, paint over the area, in a nuetral color. J.
Take the hardware off, then strip. Nicole Curtis boils hers to soften lol layers of paint but I've never tried that method.
