Terry Haas on Jun 18, 2011That is the best remedy I know of. Febreeze spray works for temporary fix but more permanent...Kilz There are additonal groups out there that specialize in odor removal. Try these: Hope this helps. Terry •Removes Smoke Smell Fastwww.BiocideSystems.com Chemically Removes Odors. No Dangerous Ozone or Perfumes. •Remove Cigarette Smellwww.vamooseproducts.com Vamoose! Hewitt Remodeling Services LLC on Jun 20, 2011Linda, Smoke gets absorbed into surfaces, whether it is from a fire or from years of cigarette smoke. Kiltz does not remove the smell of smoke; it seals it in. I had renters in a former home of ours for 12 years. They were horrific smokers. I ended up kiltzing anything that was "hard and painted" and removed and replaced all the carpeting and even the wallpaper. It was the only way to clear the smell from the house. Everything else was just a temporary cover-up. TimHelpful Reply

Nichter's Home Services Corp on Jun 20, 2011Bin is another product like Kilz for sealing it in. Ozone machines can sometimes be rented to remove odors and give it that new home smellHelpful Reply

Woodbridge Environmental Tiptophouse.com on Jun 20, 2011Be carefull of Ozone units. While they will help remove the odors they can also produce harmful ozone that is not healthy to breath in large concentrations. Ideally these units should be used when the house is not occupied for ones health.Helpful Reply

Nichter's Home Services Corp on Jun 21, 2011True. Somehow I had the impression this was a vacant rental being refurbished. Must have crossed my wires with another thread someplace.Helpful Reply

Celeste K on Jun 21, 2011I bought this product ODOBAN and sprayed down an apartment that had two smokers and 9 dalmations (7 puppies) living in it with carpet. The smell doesn't seem to have come back. It probably can't hurt yo try it. Amazon sells it http://www.amazon.com/OdoBan-Odor-Eliminator-Gallon-Concentrate/dp/B000ZOQ9HYHelpful Reply

Jamie R on Aug 07, 2011I do feel as if the KILZ original worked well to cover up 50 years of smoking in our new house but the KILZ was also so disgusting. It has been 4 months and the room still smells like chemicals.Helpful Reply

Paul M on Aug 07, 2011I cleaned a paneled house once that had smokers in there for about 50 some odd years. I used diluted Murphy's oil soap to do the job. It took 4 washings to get it decent and every time I cleaned the water would get brown pretty fast. When it was stretching out between water changes that is when I decided it was good enough to fly. I don't think it was 100% clean when I was done but you could not tell by looking and the smell was gone. You know even the glass on the windows were brown in that house, it was a real chore cleaning that place out.Helpful Reply

Woodbridge Environmental Tiptophouse.com on Aug 08, 2011Remember that the smoke as Hewitt stated is absorbed into the surface and gets into all kinds of areas not able to be washed. Of course washing is very important to do before using any kind of sealing primer such as Kilz as its part of the surface prep required to have a long lasting finish. But paint alone will not remove all of the odor as its within the walls due to air movement and stack effect of the home. Ozone machines will get into all of these areas, It will not prep the walls for paint as cleaning and priming will do, but it will remove the odors and end up leaving the house smelling fresh and clean.Helpful Reply

Linda D on Aug 11, 2011thank you all so much for your suggestions. They've given us some things to consider. This is for a half bath where there is no carpet or fabric of any kind and it's funny that the odor would just be noticed in that bathroom. Maybe someone was trying to hide the fact. Umm ididn't work. lol thanks again everyone.Helpful Reply

Woodbridge Environmental Tiptophouse.com on Aug 12, 2011smoke odor can get into grout, and wall materials. Also if there is a fan in the bath that too can have smoke residue inside the fans. Check your heat system. If you have hot water heat, radiators or even electrical heat from a fan system above, all can provide a spot for where the odor can hide.Helpful Reply

Vicki M on Aug 15, 2011Get rid of the smokers. Just kidding (in a way). Light a candle, preferably lemon or any citrus smell should do it. Open all the windows for awhile first.Helpful Reply
