Stripping off A LOT of chalk paint
I've had my first (of many, I'm sure) disastrous DIY project. I have covered my entire kitchen cabinetry with chalk paint and I hate it. It's streaky, it's cracking, ... See more
It looks like you might need to do some wood filling on your cabinets, in that case you would really need to do some sanding to smooth out the areas. Other than that if you apply the chalk paint with a roller you will get a smoother finish. If you’re not absolutely committed to chalk paint, you might try a good quality paint/primer product. It can give you just as nice of a finish. Behr is a good product and Sherwin Williams has a self leveling paint that also really works well
You may want to rethink chalk painting. Please research people who have done this and regretted it. Chalk paint is too easy to come off.
I would use a real nice kitchen and bath satin paint on those. First sand, then prime with Zinseer 1-2-3 or Kilz, and then paint. I would use a smooth foam roller to paint.
I have a cousin who took the Annie Sloan chalk paint swatch book to Ace and had them copy the color she wanted in a gallon of paint made by Benjamin Moore called, Advance in matte finish. She primed the whole set and used this paint and it came beautiful. I think it was 30 something a gallon. She didn't use a wax as the finish like a lot of chalk paint products say you should.
I agree with others about rethinking the chalk paint. I just did my bookcases with chalk paint and it is definitely not going to take much wear and tear......even with 2 topcoats. Investing in a really good primer and washable paint would be worth it for kitchen cabinets.
I painted my cabinets with a cabinet paint kit. It was a lot of work, and turned out just ok. If I was to do it again, I would buy a really good quality paint and primer, and then put some kind of sealer to shine it up a bit. I have used chalk paint on a desk, but not something big like cabinets.
I would not use chalk paint on kitchen cabinets either! And I would not use Mineral Fusion on kitchen cabinets. And PLEASE don't use wax on kitchen cabinets! Go to Sherwin Williams and buy the paint they recommend for kitchen cabinets-even though it is expensive. Take advantage of their coupons. I painted my 30 year cabinets 4 years ago with Sherwin Williams and they still look like new. A gallon of paint will go a long ways. And prime them first!
I agree with not using chalk paint on kitchen Cabinets. I chalk painted an Ikea bookcase and while it looks really good, it does not wear well. Trying to work up the nerve to repaint the whole thing with self leveling kitchen paint.....
Chalk paint does not wear well ...I did an end table ....didnt wear well at all. I guess you need to paint something else on top of that if you want it to last. Didnt know!?!? Not what they say on the can.!!!!
i love chalk paint for items which do not have a lot of " wear & tear" They are wonderful for chests, etc because they do not require sanding and lots of prep - but I would not recommend chalk paint for kitchen cabinets. Ask your local paint store associate for their recommendation1
IF YOU DO CHOOSE TO USE CHALK PAINT BE SURE TO USE A REALLY GOOD SEALER!!!!!
I painted my oak kitchen cabinets 3 years ago and they still look good.
I made my own chalk paint it was a lot cheaper and worked out great.
Chalk paint reciepe
Flat latex paint - I used white and had them mix up the color I wanted
plaster of Paris
warm water
Mix 1/3 cup warm water
1/3 cup plaster of Paris - mix well
1 cup of paint - add to water/ plaster of Paris and stir .
Then paint cabinets. Depending on color will need 2 coats. After completely dry I used Polycrylic . It cleans up with soap and water. It comes in different finishes- satin, semi-gloss, or high gloss.
Paint over dry chalk paint allow to dry and repeat.
I used a Purdy brand paint brush a little more $$ but works great.
Thats it.
Good Luck and have fun.
