How can I remove rust and old paint from metal?
I was given older heavy lawn table and chairs, the table has a criss cross metal top with lots of paint on it. I just love it, how do I remove it to restore.
I had a friend that did this. He took his daughters bed frame to a sand blaster. It had some brass "Knuckles" on it and he just covered it with HD Carpet tape of some kind (it was blue back then). Of course, primed and painted nicely afterwards.
You can sand blast it by hand or machine. I did this to one of my old beds and it worked great. Once I got it sanded down I spray painted it.
An easy way is to use a metal brush. There are handhelds, or one you can attach to the drill to do it faster
use a safe non toxic paint remover,CITRISTRIP
Use citriStrip and leave on over night covered with plastic. The paint almost jumps off on its own. For intricate areas dip green scatchy in stripper and wouldn't have a problem. Has a nice citrus smell. I stripped the epoxy paint from my bathtub after a resurface went bad. Learned this after 1st week on Hometalk!
You can use rough sandpaper and a sander
I don't recall, but it was down to the metal. Prime right away to keep it from rusting, then the color is your choice.
