I want to add glaze to a finished coffee table.

I have a pre-finished coffee and side table. The wood is very light, almost white. I wanted to distress some areas and add a bit of glaze or stain or whatever works best into the carved design on the corners of the tables. Do I have to strip or sand or can I paint right over the surface as is? Many thanks.

I would sand the surface with a fine grit first so ensure that the glaze sticks
You could also use epoxy from Hobby Lobby. Practice on something small. Use 40% off coupon. Thick like acrylic. That will protect from scratches.
