what are they made of
If you mean for kitchen countertops, please send what your countertop is made of, as it does make a difference: i.e. laminated formica, wood, granite, etc.
Do you want a paint or a stain. Visit Lowes or Home Depot. They usually nice about helping you.
Gianni makes a good countertop paint kit. I would check them out
You can use Rutoleum or Gianni countertop restoration kits
I actually painted a laminate bar height table. I sanded it some, for better adherence of what was to follow. I then applied 2 coats of Kilz primer for latex. Then I very lightly sanded that, and applied a latex high-gloss paint. (just the sheen I preferred) I sanded lightly between coats. (of coarse completely clean saw dust/debris from surfaces before the actual next coating of anything). I then applied applied a polyurethane coating.
I chose to apply all coatings with a small roller to avoid brush strokes or bubbles from spraying. It has held up perfectly.
I hope this helps.
