You can do a process of white washing. Mixing paint with water, apply with a sponge, let dry, add 2-4 more coats depending on the amount of coverage you want.
Painting will ruin it. Will hurt the resale value of the home. Vacuum and Scrub it with TSP. Decorate it with lighter colored accents.
Brick can be painted using any paint color you choose.
