I want a metal base with narrow drawers for it, but it has to be 37" wide. This would be used in a farmhouse dining room. Looked at tool chests, but they don't come in right height or width. the narrow drawers would be ideal for silverware, place mats, napkins, serving utensils. The top and whatever bottom would be painted jade green with white trim. Any ideas out there ???
You did not mention the height you are seeking, only that they are not right. Grainger has a lot of different sizes and styles of tool carts but can run into large dollars. Here's a reasonably priced unit that's 36" wide. An oak top would add beauty and utility making up for that 1/2" on each side.
I would start searching restoration and antique stores. Also estate sales. Even try habitat for humanity stores, they may have had something you could use donated to them. Search online stores too. You have a very unique piece there, I hope you find a mate for it. Good luck.
If you go ahead and use this or another tool cabinet I, for one, would be thrilled to see the finished project. You can be sure that you are the only one on your block who has anything like this.
Remember the oak cabinets, about 20" square and 42" high with glass doors made to house stereo components? I made one of those into storage with drawers for all of those little screws, nails, fittings, picture hooks, etc. Took a lot of imagination and modification of the box but it works great, with front and back accessible and on wheels so it can move where it's needed or to access the other side. Your project reminds me of my $10 thrift store purchase.
I got rid of a dozen of those plastic drawer cabinets that covered my shelves. Easier to find things when they are all in the same place too. Hardly a day goes by that I'm not in that cabinet. Replaced some lost metric brake hardware on a friend's Schwinn this evening.
