What colors to paint a small kitchen to make it look bigger?
It has dark wood cabinets that look varnished. The house was built in 1963 & never been made over but only the walls with wall paper. The floors have old tile that's been scratched bad also.

Hi Lisa. You will want to stick with light colors. Especially if the cabinets are dark. Gray's are in right now. Otherwise I would go with a light golden yellow or beige. Good Luck!
Be sure to go with a light bright color, white is a crisp option to brighten up a small space and since it is a kitchen you can use a semi-gloss paint that will also brighten up the space. New backsplash will help too.
I would say that the lighter you can go with paint the bigger your area will look. You can paint your cabinets, remove wall paper, and you may be able to float a floor over what you have now or remove the old tile and replace with new. You also might need to revamp your lighting with new fixtures to make it lighter and brighter. You have lots of options and many that you can do yourself! With a few weeks of work (or less) you can have a better looking kitchen!
I recommend looking online with a search for "images of small kitchens". It may surprise you how much intense color can be used in tight spaces. Using two different shades of the same color, you can create depth that fools the eye making one wall look much farther away than an adjacent wall.
I would go with a light color. Dark colors make it look smaller. That’s just my opinion
