Paint and/or new knobs and a new top, sink and fixtures can make a big difference.
Pick a color you like. You can have a red vanity cabinet if you wish! Any color scheme will work. We are seeing a lot of grey right now, but keep in mind that next year it will be an entirely different color everyone is crazy about. (I am beginning to see a lot of peacock blue in today's redo shows!)
I have gone from chrome to dark, to brass...which went out of style and yet now brass is coming back...so use what you like.
A white bathroom with a red vanity, a white top, and a black and white floor would be stunning!! If you are not changing out the flooring right now get a black fluffy rug to go next to the vanity or tub!
BTW, people are now going nuts for mid-century modern which had lots of aqua, pink and other pastel colors in tile!
I have 2 of these 80's vanities that with Formica doors that had oak strips at the top of the drawers and doors but no knobs. I did not want to tear up the areas but wanted a quick update. I painted the wood with 2 coats of Kilz and 2 coats of latex paint...giving each coat a day or so to dry thoroughtly...now some 10 years later it is still i perfect condition. Added knobs and it looks totally different...and I still love it. (This very white...the lighting is bad)
