If you absolutely can't sand them smooth, I recommend that you paint the walls with a textured paint to cover the imperfections. I did a bathroom EXACTLY like this one and you can see photos of it under my name on this Hometalk.
You should lightly fill divots, and go with a matte paint, glossy paint will show every flaw
The less perfect they are the more you'll see the imperfections of the walls. You can use a flat paint, but you'll still see spots that weren't prepared properly and it is difficult to clean.
You could try by painting some textures so then the flaws will not matter. Some of these are so very awesome! I want to paint!

You really should patch and repair holes but if that is not what you want I would use a paint with primer. Use a roller for the large areas and a brush for cutting in the edges. Also use painters tape to keep the paint off the edges.
Every little bump will show up without first sanding. The better the prep job the better the final result.
