Over time, especially the bottom, bathroom mirror is blackening at edge. What can I do to cover, decorate, hide this in a contemporary design?

Is the blackening due to moisture damage? If so, first seek to lower humidity with automatic, humidity sensing fan. Run fans for 20 min. after showers and dry all surfaces.
You can cover edges with wooden blocks(plain or carved designs) which can be painted, stained, polurethaned or Marine grade varnished.
You could try contact paper cut at appropriate angle, or glue seashells, metal art pieces (adequately sealed for moisture), glass tiles, etc.
I took trim board and mitered the edges so I could make a frame for the mirror. Painted the pieces front and back because the back will reflect in the mirror. Then I mounted each piece using command picture hanging Velcro strips. It only took minutes to mount and if I decide to change the look I can take the pieces down, repaint and rehang.
If you’re not up to unmounting the mirror & chemically stripping off an even stripe of the slivering around the entire mirror,
then frame it in molding like a picture frame (finished in a water proof finish)
or apply cabinet edgebanding (self adhesive) in either a melamine finish or wood veneer (needs waterproofing) - it comes in a roll in either 1/2” or 3/4” thick.
