HI all , suggestions? I've painted a table with polyshades wood stain (black)This table is for my daughter (3 boys ) what can I put over this table to give it a rock hard diamond (high gloss) finish.im making the top a clock face so I would want to protect it from spills etc. Polyshades said all in one but just want extra protection . I'm new to this process so it's been trial and error so far .

    Hi Tammy,

BOB read my mind, that is just what i would suggest, epoxy paint is durable and would give you the finish you are after. You can find this paint is available at DIY stores.

a two part epoxy finish -- like used on bar tops .... will still scratch, but only if they dig at it with a sharp knife!

Well, you started with a polyurethane product. It has a durable seal. Water based polyurethane may LIFT OFF using other products on top of it that contain chemicals that will etch or dissolve polyurethane.

My recommendation is using the same water based polyurethane, high gloss, over your design. You may need 2-3 coats. Allow full drying time between coats to get that smooth, glass like finish, with a steel wool sand between coats for any imperfections.

Next time, use just the stain, and then black laquer finish. Or use SPAR urethane, which is designed for outdoor/marine use. I rarely use polyshades stsin+polyurethane products...they are difficult to get a uniform stain with unless the wood piece is uniform, perfectly clean, and preconditioned, in my opinion.

I have been refinishing furniture pieces and new pieces for over 30 years and refinished wood decks for a boat and floors in homes.
