We rent and have Butcher block counter tops. They're really pretty, but between my husband, myself and three teenage boys who seem always to be cooking/eating something--and I'm the only one who seems to know how to clean up a mess--they're kind of a pain. They need to be oiled at least once a month, and you need to be careful about putting hot pans on them. (Hubby accidentally "branded" the counter when he pulled a hot cast iron wok off the stove and put it on the counter. ) 😮
If I were building or remodeling my own kitchen I'd choose something else--but that's my personal opinion.
Everyone knows that hot items should not go on any countertops. That includes granite & tile. I think concrete would be good, but don't spill anything unless there's a heavy coating of protection.
Yes, my husband knew hot items shouldn't go on the countertop, but all the burners were occupied and he didn't want to chance cracking another cast iron pan (like I had done), so he put it on the counter for one second before he realized his mistake. We're hoping to be able to sand it down enough to get rid of the "brand". :-\
Not a big deal. Who hasn't burned or left a mark from hot pans. For me it was the kitchen table. It was getting scratched up anyway and needs to be refinished or painted...or donated! Lol.
