there are paints specific to bricks and fire places. check at a dedicated paint store, not the big box diy's.
Hi David! The easiest way to paint a brick fireplace is with an inexpensive paint sprayer but it can also be done with paint brushes and/or paint roller. The paint sprayer I used for mine is called a Homerite Finish Max. If the brick is covered in soot, it's best to clean it first with a degreaser like TSP. Use a stain blocking primer like Kilz and then you can paint. Latex has held up well on mine.
