Colour Schemes- any advice?

I have decided to chalk paint some old, and rather neglected oak side tables. Unfortunately I have no idea how I can lift these dark tables to fit in to my sitting room which has pale yellow walls; an Arabic style dark red rug; green suite. Advice will be much appreciated.
