For best results I would suggest sanding. It's a bit of a hassle but you'll be happier in the end!
No, absolutely not! If you have a piece of furniture with a beautiful wood grain underneath then by all means, sand it down and let that beauty show, but, even if your piece has a beautiful grain and you just don't want to mess with hit than slap a coat of chalk paint(Dixie Bell works nicely) or Valspar, perfectly white, primer and paint in one on it(or any color you choose besides white, just don't skimp here..go primer & paint!!l With the base coat down the Unicorn spirit will have something to grab onto..so go to town and experiment! And, remember...a project with Unicorn spit is never ruined...let dry and add more colors on top until you get it to where YOU love it, and make sure you seal with 3-4 coats of an oil based poly.. Unicorn Spit is water based..so be sure your sealer is oil based. Make sure you love it before you seal it because once sealed it's done!
