How to distress paint

Tried making this home sign...how does this patina background look .i tried different colours as base coat and then coated it with patina chalk paint and then distressed it with Vaseline....my doubt is have I distressed it too much and how to give it a glossy and bright finish....it looks dull as of now.planning to coat it with mod podge glossy or polyurethane.is that Ok.
It looks great! When using chalk paint I wait for the paint to dry and I distress it by using the corner of a wet sponge. You can use Mod Podge but I would recommend a clear wax such as Johnson's floor wax as a finish. Like your floors, wax and buff. It will give you the shine and protection you are looking for.

I LOVE it! It looks distressed and rustic! You could add a coat of spray poly if you want to add some shine to it but if it were me I would leave it as is! Do what you think is best!
