dark walnut is the furniture and there are 2 windows that let in a lot of light. I wanted to try the grays out but i never seem to pick the right one. Always comes out way to dark

Pinterest is THE place to go for decorating and design ideas. Best way to paint is what works best for you. If there was a single best way then there would not be another way. Why would anyone choose something else? Preparation of the old surface to allow for good adhesion of the new paint is the most important factor in painting. Okay, the best way is to have a pro do it.

Since you are only planning on the Living Room, first get the furniture since who knows you might choose one with color on the seats. After you have then take pics of the dining room's padded seat cover color and design and visit your paint department to get a series of color pallets that will tie in the seats with the existing colors in the surrounding living spaces and your mood at the moment, if you don't want to end up with a traffic light home (red, yellow, green) we had yellow living room green corridors to the bedrooms and each bedroom a different color one deep wine, the other young fawn brown and the last one beachy blue color.

last week we decided to tone things down little by little since we will be replacing the flooring soon we decided to pain the living room, corridor, kitchen and mudroom in Grey not too light not to dark and painted one wall in the living room light grey.

All this to avoid messing the new hardwood look tiles we will install next.

As for bedrooms only the deep wine will be changed with another calm clear color I can't remember right now.

    good luck with your project.

grays are very difficult to work with, although very up to date.Get some color sample chips, bring them in ,select what you think you like and looks well, buy sample jars and paint the removable sheets now available.look at the colors morning, noon and night.

BI recently painted my dining area a light gray and trimmed it in white. Used the eggshell finish. It really looks classy and looks nice with black metal sconces, a big mirror. I used a white lace tablecloth. Greenery centerpiece with glass candleholders. Use your favorite color accessories to add some color. I used blue & pale yellow placemats & chair cushions. With this neutral background, anything matches and is easy to change out.
