Painting formica counter tops

Moxie on May 31, 2014Yes you can!! I also wondered if this really worked and how big of deal it was..while redoing my kitchen (with new tops all ready ordered) I figure I had nothing to loose to answer my own question lol. I just lightly sanded the plastic laminate top and edges with a sanding block, painted with 3 coats of zinsser primer, painted with three coats latex paint and finished off with 3 coats of clear poly (Varathane from Lowes for wood floors lol). The paint held great; that top sat there for a month before mine came in and was used, abused and washed. Had I known that I would have just painted my old tops. I'm sure plenty of folks have special paint and processed they used but I'm a believer it will work to paint them : )Helpful Reply

Stella Jemas Bakirtzis on May 31, 2014Rustoleum has a kit that is available. I am in the same situation and was at Home Depot yesterday buying paint and inquired about it. remember to keep in mind you cannot use just any type of glaze, pain, or varnish because of poisoning in the product that can be transferred to anyfood you make put on the countertop.1 marked as helpful Reply

Leslie Long on Jun 02, 2014I agree with Stella, about the Home Depot kit. I work at Home Depot in six departments, including the paint dept. It is made by Rustoleum and can be tinted in about six different colors. It comes with an instructional DVD and everything you need to paint your formica/laminate countertops. Also, don’t forget that Home Depot will price match so if you find it cheaper somewhere else, they will match the price for you if you bring a copy of the other ad. Good luck!
