Can I use Unicorn Spit Stain over oak railing/spindles?

I read somewhere about using a stain(possibly unicorn spit) over an oak railing to change the look of too much oak. Anyone know about this? I believe the person wiped or brushed it on, then used a rag to immediately wipe off some of the color. I would like to give my bannister a blackish tone. Thnx

Are you sure it was unicorn spit and not general fishes stain?

Not sure at all. Want to know if anyone has ideas, thoughts.

I would try it on a blank wood rod or spindle. Just put some on your latex gloved hand and rub down the shaft once in a twisting manner. You can do the same thing with a stain or paint color. I did a stairwell of spindles with a light brush with stain in a similar fashion. Gave a nice effect .

This would not be raw wood, but finished oak. Is that what you were covering in the spindles you did? I want a blackish tone.

What stain product did you use?

      Thanks for replying!

If your spindles have a glossy finnish, I would rub them down with a bit of sandpaper first. I do not remember the brand of stain I used, but all are about the same. I still recommend you test it out until you are satisfied with your skill set and technique. Maybe buy a $5 old chair at a junk shop and test it out on the spindles.
