What kind of paint can I paint over cabinets painted with auto paint?

When our house was built they used auto paint to paint our cupboards. They now look horrible and we have been told the only way to repaint them is for us to leave for a few days and have someone come in and repaint with auto paint again. We have to leave due to fumes that would be toxic to us and our pets.

Just lightly sand to remove any gloss and roughen for paint. Prime with a good stain blocking primer like Zinsser 123, BIN, or Kilz. Then paint with acrylic latex paint. Seal with at least three coats of a water based polyurethane. Use and foam roller and foam brush for a smooth finish.

Ditto what William recommended just don't use the Kilz odorless....it doesn't block as well as the original Kilz does. I'm in the middle of redoing my cabinets right now. I choose to sand, prime, and use Behr semi-gloss enamel cabinet paint with the foam roller. Also spray painted all of the brass hinges and handles Satin Nickel. The tops are finished and came out fantastic.
