How can I upcycle crochet spools?

I am a crocheter with crochet thread. I have a lot of the card board "spools". What can be made with them. They're open at both ends so it's not real good to put thing in them. Any ideas would be appreciative.

Use them to start seeds. Fill with potting soil. The whole time thing can be planted since the spool is biodegradable.

I either paint them or wrap them with pretty paper and them glue them to a paper covered, thick piece of cardboard. They make pen holders or crochet hook holders. If they are not tall enough I glue 2 together before decorating them.

I cut mine an use for thread cards instead of buying the ones for my cross stitch.

The cardboard they are made of is thicker and stronger than paper towel centers or toilet paper roll centers. Any project made of those could be made with the thread centers and be stronger.
