Want to help yourself & someone else, too?
Now look on your desk, in your drawers, on shelves, what is hiding under that pile over there? Check closets and anything that might be applicable to the room picked for the month. Keep this in mind while looking - 'If I don't use it, I don't need it'. This should be your mantra as you go digging through your unneeded items. De-clutter your home and allow others to reap the benefits of your cleaner house.belong to a group called freecycle.

3po3 on Jan 25, 2012I've always liked the "if you haven't used it in a year, you don't need it" rule. It doesn't quite work for all my clothes. I need a suit and tie about once every two years anymore, so I would be SOL if I strictly followed that rule.Helpful Reply

Sherrie S on Jan 25, 2012Steve G, keep the suit because you will use it. I have a lot to do myself. I bought it, don't use it and store it. I've done this before & it really makes me feel good when it makes others happy.Helpful Reply

Sherrie S on Jan 26, 2012Rose S, I'm very surprised. I can't imagine anyone being rejected. Did you type freecycle.ORG? When you do that it will ask for your zipcode so you can find freecycle near your home. Try it again & if it fails I will contact my local freecycle to try to get assistance for you.Helpful Reply

Caitlin S on Jan 26, 2012I joined the freecycle near me about a month ago. When requesting to join it was suggested to write that you 'live in the TOWN and are looking to get rid of stuff you have for free' otherwise they might reject you because they aren't sure if your request is spam or not.Helpful Reply

Sherrie S on Jan 27, 2012Douglas, when I gave away etched glass doors I put them at the road for pickup and my neighbor came over & asked if he could take them. Teresa D, why don't you start one in your area. I'm too lazy so I'm glad someone else did it for my area.Helpful Reply

Alice W on Jan 27, 2012I love Freecycle! I have gotten lots of great stuff from my Freecycle friends including a dvd/vcr player, mountains of packing boxes, three shell collections, a bird caller, drafting squares, art supplies, 20 gigantic canvases. I haven't had much to get rid of, but I was thrilled someone wanted my frosted glass shower doors. What a great community!Helpful Reply

Rose S on Feb 16, 2012My new project is to replace two closet doors (sliders) with bi-folds. But the openings are 1/4" too narrow, now what do I do? Sliders are hateful and I can access only 1/2 of the closet, which is a nuisance. Any suggestions?Helpful Reply

OhSally on Apr 06, 2015I just got rid of about 500 plastic nursery planters of various sides, and planter trays as well as about 100 various ceramic and plastic planting pots that I have had stored in my shed this past weekend via Freecycle. Last year, I did some work on my front landscaping and took out some low-growing heather bushes, several Euphorbias that grew too fast for where I'd planted them, and a 4 foot tall volunteer evergreen tree that popped up in my front flower bed and listed them on Freecycle. The lady who came and got them was almost in tears she was that we had dug them up and had them ready to load in her car. People getting freebies apparently expect to work for them, but I prefer being the one digging in my flower bed. I just LOVE Freecycle! It feels good to give things away to be used instead of sending them to the landfill.Helpful Reply

Melody Drinkwater Wagner on May 09, 2016I always give away free things. Beautiful things. My last give away was 3 children's Little Tykes Big Swimming pool with slide, Tykes smaller sandbox and a huge boat sand box/swimming pool. As I was putting them to the curb for someone to take, one woman drove by and asked if I was selling these. I said no, anyone can take these. She wanted all 3. I asked her if she wanted me to put in my back parking area until she got off of work. The smile on her face was AMAZING! It was for her grandchildren. I love GIVING!Helpful Reply
