what is the difference between R13 and R15 insulation?

    r-2....R-13 is what typical 2 x4 walls are filled with (fiberglass batt) a 2 x 6 wall uses R-19 batts Ceiling should be insulated to R-30 to R-50. 12" of fiberglass gets you to the r-38

    R values are a measure of thermal resistance, measured as area multiplied by temperature and divided by BTU, or unit of energy. Without getting really technical, it just means that R15 insulation will block heat transfer slightly better than R13, but neither is particularly serious insulation.
