Cutting piece of carpet for bathroom

We are doing a little pretty up in our bathroom, and my husband wants to use the old carpet as a pattern for the new. Someone told me to make sure he does not lay the old carpet bottom on top of new carpet nap to cut, it will not fit right. You have to put nap to nap then cut, is that correct? or should he just put the old carpet bottom on top of the nap to cut to shape? He knows to cut it a little large to allow for stretching and recutting, but I am curious about this comment, whether it's true or not.

I'm afraid you were told incorrectly. If you put nap to nap, then cut, the new rug will have to lie upside down on the floor! Just place the old carpet - just like it was in the room - directly on top of the new carpet, exactly like it will lie on the floor in the room. And, yes, allow extra around the edges to allow for fitting, stretching, etc.

That's what we are doing. Didn't make sense to me that you'd flip flop it at all. Just wanted to see what you all thought before going ahead with it, but, we honestly were going to do it the way you and I think it should be anyhow. It makes sense. We will just leave a couple extra inches all the way around to fit it properly . I like to from time to time test out thoughts though. lol Thanks Marilyn. sue

I suggest you make a kraft paper pattern of the old rug and make sure it fits the same area. When it is in place, mark the top side TOP with a marker and then use that as your pattern for cutting. Much easier than using the old rug as a pattern,,,,,,,,and not chance of transferring any soil from the old rug to the new. Happy flooring,,,,Gary

@LandlightS Thanks so much. We cut it yesterday and installed it. It turned out fantastic. We simply put the old carpet on the new and cut it two inches larger all the way around and then worked from there. Went very smoothly. thanks again
