Yamini LEED AP at Urbanmotifs on May 09, 2011The smell of the bats may repel the butterflies, did you think of the smell aspect?Helpful Reply

3po3 on May 09, 2011JL, I think you have a solid theory, and I would be very curious about Yamini's theory. Some plants odors seem innocuous or even unpleasant to us, and are attractive to butterflies and other insects, and vice versa. I wouldn't assume butterflies are turned off by the smell of bat guano, which can be intense.Helpful Reply

3po3 on May 10, 2011JL, found an interesting website today - http://www.batcon.org/ Bat Conservation International. They have lots of tips about setting up bat boxes. Their temperature needs to be controlled, and apparently there is nothing you can effectively do to attract bats. They just have to find your little bat box and move in. It could be years before your get bats, which will give the butterflies plenty of stink-free tenancy in the butterfly house. Also, a group of six bats in your bat house could eat up to 10,000 insects a night. Holy bats, Batman.Helpful Reply
