It really depends on whether you will be using them for hot drinks or for crafts. If you expect to drink out of them, you can use markers made especially for ceramics and draw designs that match your kitchen or personalize them with initials or artwork. If you are using them for crafts, you can spray them with glue and glitter or dip them into paint for the "dipped" effect. You can also wrap them in twine and use them to plant herbs or small succulents.

Use paint pens to decorate them, plant small seedlings in them and add a bow around the handle to use as small gifts, fill with candies and wrap in cellophane as gifts,
You can use a Sharpee oil paint pen and write stuff on them, like "Coffee" or "Grandpa's Sippy Cup", etc. There are all kinds of funny stuff on line, try Pintrist--type in funny sayings and see what comes up. Give as gifts with a spoon dipped in melted chocolate, a small trial package of coffee, some gourmet chocolates, and a pretty napkin. Tie a pretty ribbon on the handle. My aunt gave me 2 coffee mugs that say "Gourmet Lutheran Coffee" on them. My favorites! You could write any religion on them.
Don't give up on marbalizing just yet, it took me a bit to get the hang of it but now love it. First make sure you are using hot water, if it begins to cool replace with more hot. Use a shallow rectangular container so it gives you enough room to roll item, and don't put colors to close together to start. Use old glass jars to practice getting the feel for it. Goodluck!
