Koi Fish Pond

My parents have a koi fish pond in the midwest and have asked me if its better for their prized Koi fish to allow the pond to freeze over or keep a pump on to aerate the water and not freeze over. I have read that Koi can take the cold and the digestive systems go dormant in the cold. Any first hand advise? Thanks

I am in Colorado and I know that most people around here run pumps and keep their ponds from freezing over. The issue is not just temperature but also oxygen. The fish may suffocate if there isn't enough oxygen exchange, as through a frozen surface.

Thanks for the quick response Steve. What you wrote about oxygen exchange makes total sence they will need the same amount of oxygen in the water through the winter. I have researched and the pros mainly adressing the feeding of the Koi over the winter, but not much said about the aeration of the water. I will make sure the pump runs throughout this cold season.
