I have judges panelling in my family room, and I'm thinking of painting it white.

How should I go about doing this or should I get a professional to do the job? There are also matching wood shelves on either side of the fireplace, as well as wood stained crown molding. Sounds like a big job.....

Painting paneling is a one way trip...getting that "wood" back is near impossible short of tons of work of stripping and sanding. If you are planing to be in the home for some time and the "painted" look is what you are after then go for it. some light sanding and an oil based primer may be needed to get good adhesion, most wood surfaces are finished with an oil based varnish or poly, latex paint will not bind well without the proper prep...good luck and post pics

I am with KMS, I would follow the procedure explained above. The best way to get this done fast is, have all the material, have a plan and attack. Any diversions and other activity always disrupts Diy work. I hate when I have to leave my DIY to finish an errand. Good Luck with your project!

We just did a job like this for a pizza shop. We sanded down the paneling, used a deglosser to wipe it clean, then used the Bullseye 1-2-3 product to prime the stuff before our final topcoat. At first the stuff will seem like it comes off easy, but after the topcoat goes on and a couple days of the primer/paint curing, you can't scratch the stuff with your fingernail no matter how hard you try.

Good idea Mary. It's a job for a small crew of professionals. You could even do something extra with a glaze or some color in the panels or back of the bookshelves. If you can, post a picture for some valuable free input. Best, Charles

you really need a painting crew familiar with the way aging affects the overall,,,,,,,,after application of finish,,,and climate that changes pigments,,in oils,,,and coverings,,that Peace painting looks good
