What options are there for painting a tile floor in the kitchen?

We are buying a house and after some of the more critical fixes we will be out of money to replace the floor in the kitchen which is large light pink tile.
We are going to paint the counters...most likely white and a dark solid counter top
current kitchen color

Hello Sara, Do you mean paint the floor? Tile can be tricky to paint over. Prep is everything. The tiles will neeed a hard sanding to allow any paint to stick. An epoxy paint might do the trick but it will need to be slip resistant as well. A member here "Amazing Improvements" may can help you out. It is not an ideal scenario but it can be done, especially being desperate enough to cover up that pink floor. If you must do it yourself, use a primer called XIM available at Sherwin Williams then follow their advice on what top-coat to use. And yes that floor must be pristine clean or you'll have a problem. It's a technical application and of course nothing will wear like the tile. If you are careful and don't expect too much, it will work. Best, Charles

My goal is to get a floor that is not pink and would last 3-5 years at most

Careful what you wish for. That tile doesn't look bad. I mean we're not talkin' Barbie pink. Sounds like with painting tile you could end up with something much worse - and hard to remove.
  • I have to agree with Steve and Peace. The tile may not be your dream color, but can be "recolored". Prep will be key and there will be ALOT of prep work. Sanding, cleaning and more sanding and cleaning. If you can deal with it for a couple years, you seem to already have decided to replace in a couple years, just put a throw rug over it. Why pay to fix something twice?

Five years more of mauve would be more than I could stomach. Epoxy paint will wear that long. CP
  • Painting a tile floor will require a LOT of prep work. . . not an easy job. There are some lovely (and cost effective) new vinyl flooring options that are available today. Rather than expending the energy on the prep of painting it, try putting your efforts toward removing that tile and replacing it with a vinyl. Then, when you are ready to install the "floor of your dreams", the hard part will be done.

I wonder if there is a way to just go over the existing floor directly with the vinyl tile.

OK guys, this looks more 'terra cotta' than 'pink' if this is not the case....paint the other surfaces and THEN decide what to with the floor. Look at decorating schemes from virtually any hispanic country and you may feel more comfort with the tile which you have. Painting tile on floors is very problematical....forget the prep,it is just a terribly abused surface, I mean we walk on it all the time. If you visit European chateaus which have tile on the floors it is always worn down to the clay body., really ugly. Glaze is much tougher than paint of any sort. If you can't live with the tile as it is, bite the bullett and replace it or cover it . Cover it with an underlayment and rolled goods , or tile, or replace it with something but for heavens sake DON'T Paint it. You will spend more time, money, materials etc. than if you had done your dream floor...honest. If you hate it but wish to replace it later buy cheap carpet or vinyl rolled goods and just cover it up....DO NOT PAINT ***voice of experience*** Steve G knows what he is talking about!
