How to cover big windows inexpensively?

Mir Graham on Oct 12, 2015Most curtains range from 84"-110". Window treatments really depend on the style of home you have decorated. There's roman shades, standard curtains, bamboo shades... tons of options. I used drop cloth curtains for years.Helpful Reply

Tammy Shoemaker on Oct 12, 2015I'd personally hit thrift stores and look for mix and match curtains but that's me. The idea of both privacy and still having light hit me. Maybe, if you want light too, try finding shutter's for the bottoms of the windows and valances on top. I've personally used flat sheets as curtains. Good luck and let us know what you come up with!Helpful Reply

Theresa Bradshaw on Oct 12, 2015Have a discount fabric store anywhere near you? Otherwise I would hit yard sales, estate sales and like Tammy said thrift stores.Helpful Reply

Moonwildflowers on Oct 12, 2015I don't think you will find blinds or shades not custom made, but for simple curtains, which can be placed inside the window with pressure rods, I have used tablecloths for fabric.. I can find pretty ones at Homegoods for much less than what I would pay for decorator fabric - in lengths to 100 inches.Helpful Reply

Jeanette S on Oct 12, 2015One of the most sensible ideas I have seen yet is taking the top of flat sheets, make a slit at the end of the hen at both sides, slide in the rods and you have curtains! A king flat might work for you. Another great idea is using drop cloths by putting grommets in them...again, no sewingHelpful Reply

Jeanette S on Oct 12, 2015P.S. You can tape off those drop clothes and paint stripes on them...a couple of 2-3" Navy stripes just under the windows is very pretty (or green, red or whatever fits with our decor).Helpful Reply

Kincaid99 on Oct 16, 2015I once had tall windows, only there for 6 months but did not want temporary curtains like hung paper or sheets nailed up. Bought several yards of some cheap cheap pretty material on sale, sewed a pocket across top hemmed the bottom, or you can use shower curtains there are some pretty ones today. When I put curtains inside my closet doorway for pretty cover up, I found out the tension rods were too flimsy and sagged. so used bathroom shower rods, much heavier and stronger. There is a tutorial for roman shades on here made from mini blinds, you could make any length you need that way. . ,Helpful Reply
