We know we can use it for water bottles, etc but with small children we were leaning towards using it as a non refrigerated item and need some ideas.

What about removing the door and using it as a shelving unit? You can store pots and pans, or make it decorative.

I understand that your family are not wine drinkers so you see no need in having the wine frig. However, to use it simply for storage seems such a waste since it is a frig afterall. The wine frig can be used to hold water bottles, soda pops, snacks for the children. It could be used as their frig with fruit, Kool-Aid, etc.. The children are small now but when they get to be teens you may be thankful you have a small frig for them to have their drinks in.

Wine fridges differ from regular fridges in a few ways. The most important being humidity levels. Wine fridges cool but keep the humidity higher, they also tend to run warmer, or even have dual zones...red vs white wine. Another feature is vibration control which is bad for wine. These higher end unit may also have UV protection in the glass door. We moved into a house with one, and I wanted to get rid of it. We kept it and now store bottled water and fruit drinks in it. We love it!
