Douglas Hunt on Mar 03, 2012Holly, there are some things you really have to do by hand, and I suspect getting rid of grass in liriope is one of them. If you can isolate the grass from the liriope, you may be able to apply an herbicide like Roundup, carefully painting the leaves of grass with a small foam bush, but to me that sounds more tedious, and a lot less satisfying, than just pulling out the grass. The same is true of the fescue in your phlox, unless the phlox is completely dormant, which it probably is not given the extremely mild winter you have had.Helpful Reply

Holly R on Mar 05, 2012@Douglas - the grass is DEEPLY embedded into the liriope and has been that way since we bought the house almost 8 years ago! I have spent many an effort most years trying to pull it out and there's just no way to get down to the roots enough. I cut back my liriope for the season a few weeks ago and USUALLY the grass sprouts up sooner than the new growth liriope does. So the paint brush technique (or using thick rubber cleaning gloves, perhaps?) has been what I was thinking of doing. Just didn't know if there was a product better than Round-Up to try first. Or something I could just spray to kill the grass, but not the liriope. The grass just seems to be spreading more now and I need to get this under control before it's OUT of control! If I can get a chance to take some photos of the areas, I will post them on here for you to evaluate.Helpful Reply

Douglas Hunt on Mar 05, 2012Check Vantage as Walter suggests. I would not use rubber cleaning gloves to apply Roundup for fear of it dripping onto the liriope.Helpful Reply

Spartan Lawn & Landscape on Mar 05, 2012Holly ~ Like Walter mentioned. My crews have used Vantage for wild grasses in Liriope and have had success. However, Doug is correct as well, even with the use of Vantage, hand pulling likely will continue, yet with minimal effort.Helpful Reply

Holly R on Mar 16, 2012Thanks guys! I just now have gotten around to researching where I can purchase Vantage and it looks like my local big-box hardware stores (Lowes, Ace, Home Depot) don't carry it. Short of trying to call every local garden supply center in the area, does anyone in the southwest Wake County (NC) area know where I can get it? I need probably the smallest size available.Helpful Reply
