Does anyone know how electronic dog fences work across driveways and walkways where the wire can't be buried?

HandyANDY - Handyman & All Repairs, LLC on Mar 23, 2012You can get a wireless or wired system....with either, the sensor can be set at up to 20' away which will cover the driveway, gate area or sidewalk. It's all about training the dog...once he gets tagged a couple of times he learns to avoid the area. http://www.electricdogfence.com has some decent information on layouts and designsHelpful Reply

Terri J on Mar 23, 2012I have had some dogs that go thru electric fence that had been put around the back and side yard. They were to set on getting what they wanted and the electric fence did not stop them!!Helpful Reply

Louise on Mar 23, 2012Most dog people, rescuers in particular, do NOT recommend electronic fences. They can keep the dog in but not predators out. Someone who wants to steal your dog can walk right in and take it. Also, roaming dogs can come in and start a fight, possibly killing or severely harming your dog. And like Terri above said, some dogs will risk the pain of the shock to leave the protected area. Pits, rotties and some dogs with very thick fur aren't affected much by the shock.Helpful Reply

Donna McCrummen on Mar 24, 2012Wow, Louise good things to think about. My Eno gets out a lot and runs off. I keep a good eye on him so I've always been there when he jets and I just follow him until I can get him. I never thought about large animals coming in - Eno weighs 6 lbs. even a chicken hawk could do damage.Helpful Reply

Sherrie S on Mar 24, 2012I have the "invisible fence" so I can tell you that they can be above or below ground and will still work. However, since it is a cable you might have to be careful that it is not broken. Mine runs under the driveway.Helpful Reply

Amazing Improvements and Garages on Mar 25, 2012Most pros have equipment to get those lines under the driveway. Some may want to run the wire in a driveway expansion joint then grout over it. As Sherrie says... The wire needs to be unbroken to operate properly.Helpful Reply

Sherrie S on Mar 25, 2012Shabby Daze, I recently removed the equipment because my BIG boy dog after 6 years decided it no longer worked . The BIG girl dog still stayed within the area . Your little Eno is too small to be left alone with predators running/flying around.Helpful Reply

Donna McCrummen on Mar 25, 2012Yes, I agree Sherri. We have a fenced yard that he plays in but I work in the driveway a lot and like him with me. I may do just a small area so he can hang out with me.Helpful Reply
