Have a cherry wood kitchen table that shows every fingerprint and handprint put on it, not a good finish....Is it best to remove current finish or can I just put another poly finish on top of it for protecting from everyday use and water stain? Thanks bann652@aol.com

Sia@South 47th on Aug 05, 2013I'd remove the finish first, it could be lacquer, or any number of things, especially if the table is an 'Imported' piece. xoHelpful Reply

Z on Aug 06, 2013Let's see what our resident expert says. @Kevin, what do you think? My first thought was a light sanding and them using a satin polyurethane on it, but not knowing the current finish (as Sia mentioned) that may not be the way to go.Helpful Reply

KMS Woodworks on Aug 07, 2013Yes the "origin" of the furniture will have some bearing on what finish was likely used. A few years back my brother complained about his dining table getting a "tan line" from the table runner his wife picked out. This table is a Thos. Moser and is pretty high end and Cherry http://www.thosmoser.com/category/dining_tables/product/56/american_bungalow_dining_table/ Most Thos. Moser is finished with a simple oil / wax combo. This allows the natural patina to develop over time. Not being aware of this they installed a table runner and got tan lines down the middle. I did some light sanding and showed them how to do some "sun therapy" to even up the color. Nearly all of the furniture I build is finished with a Satin wiping poly, this low gloss finish is really good about hiding marks and "soiling". If you piece is imported chances are pretty high it is finished with type of lacquer. If it is domestic is may be lacquer or a poly blend. I would lightly sand the top, with some 220 grit, do a tack cloth wipe down with some thinner then do a coat or two with some satin wiping poly. I like to have at least a week of "cure" before subjecting the piece to regular use. This ensures the finish is good and hard.Helpful Reply
