What color is your furniture, floor etc. look like.I would post a picture so advice can be given.
Obvious light colors make spaces expand. Currently honey wheats and buttery creams are popular. They go with everything and show off your furnishings. Beware of advice to do 'accent walls' of bold color. They grow old quickly and lower your resale value. An important decision is what finish to use. Flat gets dirty, gloss shows flaws. I choose 'satin' finish paint mostly. It gives a slight glow to the room and changes a bit as the light of day does.
First, you may find this article helpful - 6 ways to make your home look larger. It focuses more on flooring, but should help you overall. http://theflooringgirl.com/blog/5-ways-to-make-your-westchester-home-look-larger.html
Second, lighter colors will obviously make space look larger. While I agree with above commenter on avoiding accent walls, I would disagree on finishes. Flat is most stylish and shows imperfections less. Satin (and egg shell are very dated). A way to solve the wipeable is to use Sherwin Williams Duration which has wipeable flat finish. (flat is flatter than matte, BTW). (I work with a painting company).
I hope that helps.
It's hard to disguise clutter . . . Maybe some pieces of furniture that has storage, such as ottomans or benches that have storage. Knowing what kind of clutter might help us give more specific ideas.
I agree with the light colors.. you could always choose a lighter brighter version on your favorite color. It also depends on the color of your furniture.. if you have beige furnishings I would stay away from the beiges.. it will grow old fast.. Something else you could also do is add a few mirrors.. it makes the room look larger than it really is.. Instead of a accent wall you could also try a mural.. I know they are some what outdated but are making a come back..
I agree with the lighter colors, I have light colors in all of my rooms. I also paint the ceiling and trim the same color. This works great because it doesn't stop your eye with a different color. Good luck!
Lg wall mirrors. Light paint. 2 shades in 1 room. If you have a bay window, use a lighter shade in the bay area.
I would go with a light grey semi gloss. You just can't go wrong with this color.
