You could also put casters on it to make it moveable.

Thanks William - I really the idea of putting casters on it, which I might do once I get the thing built. Any idea on how I can do that? My plan is to take out shelves from a dresser and use it as a sort of island but I'm not sure how to go about it. I have tools but not much experience. Sad but true! :)
Ethel, try researching on Home Talk. There is a search bar at the top of the page, type in "kitchen island" and you'll find lots of other folks that want to do a similar project and I have read several posts here as well. It's a good way to get tons of ideas. Good luck!
We're doing this right now , we got a large sheet of white bead board to replace the sides and back of the dresser as the one we are working on had been in a flood and was really warped . We used quarter inch plywood for shelves in place of the drawers . My husband is handy with power tools so he did the cutting , but from previous experience , if you go to the store with measurements in hand and say "I need X,y, and z," they will cut it for you . Use liquid nail to attach things too awkward to hammer like a butcher block on top. Maybe place some hooks on the side to hang your pots so you can put your cookie sheets and pans on the shelves .
Thank you Cherie! I appreciate your answer so much. I never thought of liquid nails... Thank you for mentioning it. I will get my boards cut at the store where I buy them once I get my dresser purchased. And I love your advice about putting hooks on the side of the piece for my pots... great idea! Hugs!
Your answer has certainly resolved my dilemma! Merci!
