really is a matter of taste and style. some woods with really pretty grain look nice with a stain.
if you are looking for a sleek look the painted unit with the painted top maybe the way to go. What look are you going for? Hope this helps! Have a great day.
I'm not sure what you mean by unit but let's say we're talking about a table. I think that if everything was painted but the table top and then table top was stained a darker color...I'd like that best. I think it looks classy and higher-end. It really just depends on where you might want to put the piece you are working on, as to finish you will choose. So, if I'm understanding your question correctly, I would choose a painted lower portion (legs/facing) and a darker stain table top.

depending on the wood, I would go with a stained top followed by a couple of coats of water based poly in a satin finish.
