I love gardening but as I've gotten older, stooping to pull weeds is getting harder. Finding a safe weed killer would be a time and a back saver. Thank you for your help!

Hello Wjoan742, I recommend using Preen. I'm sure you already know how to use weed fabric. But you have to maintain it by putting weight on it. Which adds even more work . And that's not good for our poor backs. I like to sprinkle Preen in the garden and forget about it. You can purchase it at Home Depot or Menard's, etc. Hope this helps. Good luck and Happy Gardening.

Preen is not a weed killer. It is a preventative that does not always work. You will have to smother them out with newspapers ,cardboard,Heavy landscape fabric and mulch. There are no safe weed killers that will not effect your plants.

mulching in early spring is your best bet. Use cedar mulch in flower beds at least 4 inches thick. (You have to remove all weeds first). In my vegetable garden I use my grass clippings and just keep adding more as it decays. I never turn over the soil, which exposes more weed seeds. I just pull the mulch back and plant. When planting seeds I wait until the plants are a couple inches tall before pulling the mulch back around them. I've also made a spray of white vinegar, a little dish soap, and salt, which kills a lot of weeds.

You can place the newspaper on top of the weeds and poke holes or lay it around your plants. Then wet it and add some kind of mulch.

1 cup of vinegar, 1/2 cup Epsom salt, couple of squirts of dish liquid. Mix together to dissolve the salt. Put into sprayer and spray on to the weeds ONLY.

    Systemic Weed Killer:

One gallon of white vinegar. One cup of salt. Two tablespoons of liquid dish soap. Heat vinegar till hot. Add salt and stir till dissolved. Let cool. Add dish soap and stir. Pour in to spray bottle. You can use the "mist" or the "stream" option. Be patient. The top of weeds will turn brown but it takes awhile to get to the roots. Wait two weeks and spray again if needed. This also kills poison oak. Most white vinegar is 5% acidic but if you can find one that's 10% or 20% it will be more potent. Sometimes I cut the recipe in half if I do not have a lot of weeds to kill.
