Yes I did one last summer. One I had for over 40 years an my Ex neglected and it was petty rough condition. Rusted... nasty.... I cleaned it up then put a dark stain over the outside. The inside paper was peeling so I pulled off what I could .... mod podged over it.... then tore up in random pieces ole 1940 love letters I had previously found in a box of stuff from a lady on craigslist... after I had read and re-read them..... (the guy was away in dentist school in VA. ...she was going beauty school ) ......... then modpodged to the inside bottom and inside top of trunk... now the beauty is in my craft room.
I have some old trunks from my grandmother. They are not in good shape but I decided to do something to them. There are a lot of websites where you can buy supplies to replace any broken parts. You can also go to www.antiquetrunksandchests.com or google it and get instructions. My chests were in not so great shape so I decided to completely redo. After cleaning (which is the hardest part), I used chaulk paint for the outside and then I bought a roll of wallpaper online and did the inside. I replaced the handles because they were rotted, but I just painted the outside hardware ( the lock didn't work anyway and I didn't want the expense of replacing). It turned out good enough to store blankets in and I painted to match my bedroom.
Yvonne,
Thank you so much! Your information has directed me to a great source! Appreciate your input!
I highly recommend contacting Marvin at www.thisoldtrunk.com. Not only was he willing to provide me with all sorts of background information on my grandma's circa 1880 barrel top trunk, but he also guided me through the restoration process. Good luck!
I would love to see pictures of trunks that have been redone. I also have one the same as pictured above and have wondered what to do with it.
I mod podged mine on the inside. I used torn sheet music that was antique that I had bought over the years in antique stores. I turned out really nice looking.
