I'm looking for ways to cover up advertising on ceramic mugs

I volunteer at a Recycle Ctr with a Swap Shop. We get lots of old mugs with advertising and no one wants them. How can we cover up advertising but still use them as mugs? Decals? Paints? It needs to be something that can still be washed.

Gorilla glue buttons, shells, old jewelry, etc, over the print.

That could be a fun project for us to do with kids. We also get lots of buttons, jewelry, etc so it helps reuse many otherwise non recyclable items. Thank you for sharing your idea.

There used to be a "ceramic" paint available at Michael's... you had to bake it in a 350 (?) oven to set the paint but it was had washable after it was done.

There are different things that can remove painted logos, try everything from rubbing alcohol, nail polish remover, baking soda ,toothpaste and lemon plus salt.and even hair spray.Use a chore boy or scrubby sponge. This info came from a friend who worked for a marketing company who dealt with logos, for products.Anything stronger or chemically may leave a residue,You may be able to spray paint some and put silk flowers in as a friendship,or holiday specific arrangements but not for consumption.

I spray painted mine, I use them for organization, not for coffee or tea.

I agree with J. Fitzgerald. How about selling them as pencil cups for the desk, little planters, containers for craft supplies, etc. Just display a few samples made up that way, with all the other mugs nearby. Perhaps if people see the possibilities, they might buy a few of the ugly ducklings.

Before you paint them or otherwise craft them, you might want to look them up on eBay! Vintage Fire King / Anchor Hocking mugs sometimes sell for big prices, as do the less common Starbucks mugs. Also, groups of advertising mugs can sometimes sell quite well, especially if they have a theme going. If your store doesn't already have an online selling account, it's easy to set up and then the money can go directly to the store.

Not sure if this will work, but worth trying; full strength acetone. I use it on painted doll faces and it takes the paint off. You can get it at Sally's Beauty Supplies. Make sure it is full strength acetone.
