Start by removing the lint filter, next, vaccum the hole, where the lint goes to. Use a bottle brush to clean the sides of the wall. Wash the lint screen with dish soap and water, rinse well. Let dry completely. Check out side where the dryer vent is, open the flap and pull the lint out. Also your vent should be cleaned once a year, professionally.
Unplug dryer and keep it unplugged during this whole operation:
Pull it carefully away from the wall and find where the tubes are screwed onto the dryer.
Unscrew the hose clamps and carefully remove the hoses from the back of the dryer and the exterior vent if you can, take the vent tube (keep both ends up or you'll dump lint and stuff on the floor) to the dumpster and empty it out.
Then, using a shop vac (preferred) or a regular vacuum cleaner with the flat tube attachment, vacuum out the lint and dirt from as far into the back of the dryer where the hose was attached as you can get. Don't use a lot of force. You may have to pull the lint off the end of the attachment a few times.
Take out the lint trap and vacuum the area where the lint filter goes. If you can't get the attachment to go in that area, duct tape a piece of cardboard tube (like paper towel roll) on the end of the vacuum hose, flatten it a little and see if it will go into the slot.
Vacuum underneath the dryer as well.
Then, hold up the vent tube (outside) and look inside to make sure it's clean, reattach with the hose clamps and then you can plug the dryer back in.
