It is Ok but I always sand lightly with fine grid in between layers and use a tack cloth to remove the dust.
Have you achieved the smooth clean surface you seek? Wipe away the dust
with a damp cloth. Let dry and get staining!
oWhen I did my dining table I actually used a wet sand paper in 300 grit to get it as smooth as possible before putting a clear sealer that just brought out the original wood tone.
I'd work up to a 600 grit...or 000 steel wool for finish sanding
