First, pay attention to what colors make you feel good! What colors do you gravitate towards with your clothing? Then, decide how light or dark a tone you're looking for. A subtle smoky feeling or bright? Next, take color swatch samples home from the paint store to hold against the "givens" of your space such as furniture upholstery, flooring, etc. Finally, purchase a small sample jar of the color you THINK you may want. Put some on the wall and live with it for a bit. Look at it under different lighting conditions throughout the day.
Finally, remember it's only paint! If you end up hating it, you can always repaint and it's really not that big an error in the grand scheme of things!
Look through magazines, websites, etc to find rooms or houses that appeal to you. Pay attention to the colors used in the photos you like the most. use those colors to base your decorating around.
I look for inspiration in my favorite HGTV magazine. I take it with me when shopping for paint samples. You can look at any magazine that you like to get an idea of colors and have the paint store match it for you. They usually have the color written on the ad. Visit open house near you and see what colors are new that you might like.
What colors for where?
browse through the paint chips, look at them in your own home with your decor and most important your lighting.purchase samples and test them
Just think of what colors are pleasing to you and go from there.
I have always gone with colors that speak to me and not go by what is the present fad or you will be repainting sooner than necessary.
