I would not use wax. Three coats of a water based polyurethane will protect the finish better. Use a foam roller and foam brush for a smooth finish. Water based does not yellow over time.
Hello Michele, Instead of using a floor wax over a painted floor you would first seal the floor, UNLESS it is a chalk paint:
