Minwax has a product called Polyshades. Not a lot of choices in color but if you can find a shade that looks right you don't have to remove the old finish or worry about what had sunk into the wood. Minwax recommends mixing two or more of their colors if you are trying to match something like in a repair. Veneer has no different finishing requirements from sold wood because it is wood, just...thinner.
