If you don't want a trending color, choose a neutral that you love. You can always make the shutters and front door black. OR for a pop of color, make your front door red!

    non-trending, meaning classic? or challenging?

what style is the home, and what landscape are you putting it in?

a wooded lot gives you the option to go with deeper greens and browns than a sunny meadow, for instance...

and slate or colonial blue is perfectly natural in New England, but can be out of place in Arizona, where earthen colors are the norm.

  • My suggestion is to blend with surroundings and that goes with the style of your home. What style did you choose? Location? City, suburban, country, ranch, mission, craftsman? If you visit a proper paint store, the staff is better versed to offer suggestions. Purchase samples and try before making a final decision. For instance, I picked a silver green Rosemary color for the body of a home up in the mountains, with a chestnut color trim and a cream color for the door. Looks awesome, and several neighbors love it. I chose a light color for the door as it is dark up in those mountains and with the lighting I recommended, it is easy to find the front door in the pitch black of night. For my girlfriends craftsman style home in the smokey mountains, I went and researched colors till we found a combination that she and her hubby liked. For my house in CA on the edge of the desert, I went with a light color to reflect the excessive heat.

Vickie! Hello! :) Wow! How refreshing to hear someone ask for a NON-TRENDING COLOR. You just made me smile SO big, because you are showing me that you are a woman after my own heart :) You don't necessarily like following the crowd and being "traditional" or "conventional" but you DO like to express yourself, who YOU are on the inside. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think so. Vickie, honestly, if you want to paint your exterior doors, window frames, or whatever, a NON-trending color, give them a color you and your mate agree on (even if you decide to go with a popular color) -- maybe list the top 3 or 5 favorite colors you each have and see which ones match at which level (maybe you both have Purple on number 2 or Yellow as number 5) .... whatever color the 2 of you decide on, let it be the expression of YOUR PRESENCE, and that your home is YOURS no matter what others may think. Make your home reflect YOU and make it a place that will make you smile as you pull up to come home ;) Below is a link showing the top colors right now in painting exterior doors (because I know you said you DON'T want these LOL) ... Good Luck and thanks for asking HOMETALK for ideas :)

Painting really is very personal. My always answer....browse through the paint chips, choose different shades of a color you may like...bring home and see what the color will look like in your own home...if you think it will work buy a sample and test it.Remember lighting, room size and decor play a very large part with paint
