Hi Beverly, I did a treatment on my bricks outside and you can also do indoors. It is called a German smear. Look it up on Pinterest you will found ideas there. Good luck, I love mine.

yes
I did something similar and was advised in the paint department of my local hardware store to prime with an oil base primer, that way any paint you choose will adhere and for optimal coverage you can tint the primer the same color you choose to paint the faux brick panel. I painted paneling but this advice is good for your project too.
I used a Behr paint and primer to do a whole wall of fake brick in our bedroom. Worked great. It has been two years and no scraps from furniture or anything.
Absolutely!!! I had the same in thin brick stuff on one wall and plaster of paris on the stair wall - the house came that way. I got so tired of the white on the stairs that I just said the heck with it and painted it a semigloss dusty purple. Liked it so much that since the brick was opposite wall, I used the same latex paint - no prep at all besides dusting. They have both lasted for over 10 years. So go for it with as little work as possible
Yes they can. Ideally it would be better to stain them if you are looking for another stone based color. Remember to tape off the grout if you have any.
They can be painted but for safety- make sure you use paint that is for a high heat area. There are a few on the market that are made just for use around fireplaces.
