With a stud finder. They are inexpensive and can be found at a big box hardware store.
Other than purchasing a stud finder at the hardware store...tapping gently on the drywall and lustenening for a more solid sound will find the stud...generally speaking studs are placed 16" on centre (but that could not be the case if you are in an older home or if the wall was installed by a contractor that wasn't working to code)

A magnet finds the screws or nails that hold the drywall to the studs. Also there are usually studs near electricle outlets
Put on your little black dress, fishnet stockings, and stilletos. Go to the nearest bar. Shouldn't take long.
I have a heavy duty magnet from an old pool filter, and it works like a charm!
